I just read today in the Arizona Republic that Scottsdale based Taser International plans on introducing a new consumer stun gun at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. With its perfect record thus far on product liability litigation lawsuits against it relating to its law enforcement stun gun product, I am not surprised to see this company branching out into the consumer arena.
Last year, I reported periodically on product liability implications at Taser International. In one posting, I referred to a study published in the Journal of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers suggesting that the energy levels delivered in Taser's non-lethal weapons were considerably higher than indicated by the manufacturer placing stun guns into the lethal category of weaponry and raising the question about whether its weapons were defective and unreasonably dangerous. The study as reported in an Arizona Republic article discussed the possible dangers of the Taser weapon and its product liability implications.
Taser has successfully weathered a firestorm of controversy over its products and the deaths which have resulted from the use of its non-lethal weapons by law enforcement personnel. If such controversy exists over well-trained law enforcement and military personnel using its products, I wonder what can we expect when consumers begin to use them?

Civilans have been using Air Tasers/stun devices since the 80's with no problems and I dont expect any problems to arise out of the use of the New Taser C2. Self Defense is a human right and law abiding, tax paying citizens deserve the right to protect themselves. I have a concealed weapons permit and carry my gun and pepper spray everywhere I go. I am a violent crime survivor and can testify to the importance of having the right tools to fight back against crime. When you need a gun, pepper spray or Taser you really need one! If you could ask a murder victim if they wish they had a gun during their assault what would the answer be? It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Thank you for your comments Bret and I am sorry to hear that you have been a victim of a violent crime. As a member of the National Crime Victim Bar Association, I see victims of violent crime on a regular basis and can certainly understand the importance of personal protection tools. My comments about Taser simply were meant to highlight some general concerns I have about the new Taser consumer product and its marketing. Taser has been actively representing that its professional products are non-lethal. If, however, based upon several deaths associated with the use of the Taser professional products marketed to police and military, its weapons are in reality lethal in several circumstances, I believe that we as consumers should know. I also believe that consumer training is absolutely essential prior to use. Also, what happens when criminals use the Taser product in the furtherance of a crime? Shouldn't a criminal be charged with the same crime as if they were using lethal force? I think so and believe that criminals should not hide behind Taser's decision to market its products as non-lethal weapons as a way to avoid proper criminal penalties. I don't think that a criminal's use of a Taser rather than a gun in the commission of a crime should mean a difference between misdemeanor assault requiring no prison time and aggravated assault requring prison. These are just my opinions about the product and how it has been marketed. Thank you again for your insightful comments and I wish you well.
